Hi-Macs & Staron, Newcastle Uni.

Edinburgh International Conference Centre is Scotland’s leading venue for conferences, conventions and exhibitions. Working with one of our washroom solutions customers, Lamart (Dundee) Ltd., MSF recently supplied a number of Corian Antarctica vanity countertops to the public washroom areas. In total there are 8 rooms with the Corian countertops installed including a massive 16 bowl island countertop.

Manufactured using 12mm Corian Antarctica the countertops are thermoformed around the undermounted bowl cut outs to allow water to flow back into the ceramic bowl to prevent excess standing water on  the tops. The countertops also feature 300mm tall coved backsplashes which are lit using colour change mood lighting.

Being a North East company MSF were delighted to be asked to act as sole fabricator for the largest ever solid surface project in our region as part of the £8 million fit out of Newcastle University’s Student Union building; and what a great project it turned out to be!

Designed by Newcastle based architects Faulkner Browns the scheme used Hi-Macs and Staron solid surface to their very best potential, ensuring that not only would the surface finishes last for years but also that they looked great and provided a contemporary, sophisticated environment in which students could work and play! The project required over 400 sheets of 12mm Hi-Macs and Staron solid surface and working closely with a local shopfitting company MSF fabricated an array of furniture and fittings which brought to life the initial sketches and drawings proposed by the architect.

Centrepieces to this stylish design package were the two feature circular seats, both clad entirely in Hi-Macs, the largest of which stands over 2.5 metres tall. However equally striking was the 50m long Hi-Macs Nordic White ‘snake wall’ providing pigeon hole dividers for the Union’s many clubs and societies. MSF also supplied over 40 no. column casings to the building, including 4 Hi-Macs columns over 6m tall, along with ballustrade cladding to the main entrance and 60m of radiator casings to provide durable Hi-Macs solid surface finishes to high wear and tear areas. However Hi-Macs and Staron solid surface really came into it’s own when designing and fabricating the bars, combining durable and robust solid surface fascias and contrasting colour countertops with sweeping curves, intricate inlays and seamless expanses of solid surface.

Alongside the larger items however were an equally demanding number of furniture pieces including desks, printer stations, over 50 Hi-Macs coffee table tops, drinks tables, shopfittings, reception counters and café counters. There were also the unique ‘wings’ to the top of seating booths – made of Hi-Macs Black they were typical of the design led nature of the project.

We’re delighted to say that the refurbistment project of this 180 year old building won the Education Interior Design award in the National Mixology Interior Design Awards 2011 adding critical acclaim to the delight of Newcastle University Student Union in taking ownership of this wonderful facility.
